Cranial
Osteopathy: The Respectful
and Receptive Approach
This approach
applies osteopathic
principles to the treatment
of the whole body, including
the skull and its contents.
In 1899
Dr.Sutherland, a student of
the original Osteopath
Dr.Still, observed that the
26 bones of the skull were
connected by modified joints
which permitted a tiny
degree of physiological
motion expressed through the
skull and its membranes,
fluids and brain within.
This motion can also be felt
throughout the body, similar
to a very refined form of
breathing. |

One of the
fundamental principles of
osteopathy is that "the
living body is a
self-correcting,
self-regulating,
self-healing mechanism",
constantly working to
establish its optimum level
of health. This principle is
particularly emphasised in
cranial osteopathy, wherein
the practitioner seeks to be
as receptive as possible to
the intelligence of the
"inner physician", in order
to sense how the body is
seeking to rebalance itself.
This informs the
practitioner’s mind and
hands as to the body's state
of health, and what support
or intervention the system
requires to re-establish
balance and harmony,
restoring the freedom it
needs to get on with its job
of self-healing.
The most
common observations by
patients about Cranial
Osteopathy is that at first
it seems too gentle to be
doing anything. The
practitioner’s hands mostly
take various gentle holds
around the head and under
the sacrum although other
contacts are used from time
to time. There is then often
a period of apparent
stillness that can last for
several minutes at a time.
People sometimes experience
heat, pins and needles and
other usually pleasant
changes in their body during
a session. Often there is a
sense of tension being drawn
out of the body and at the
end a profound sense of
relaxation is achieved. Most
enjoy the experience and
intuitively are aware that
their bodies have been
helped even if they are
unsure initially as to
specifically how. Changes
most commonly make
themselves obvious after one
to two days. Sometimes this
period will include a
temporary worsening of
symptoms but this is usually
followed by noticeable
improvement.
Whilst being
very gentle and completely
safe, Cranial Osteopathy is
usually reported to be
extremely effective, often
when nothing else seems to
have worked. This is the
case both for simple bumps
and strains and for more
complex longstanding
problems. It's delicate
noninvasive nature allows
treatment at all ages and in
all states of health. This
is particularly the case in
pregnancy and infancy where
the exceptional usefulness
of the work is best known.
